========================================================================
1. INTRODUCTION TO METRIC-X
------------------------------------------------------------------------
METRIC-X is designed to be an extremely "easy to use", very accurate
METRIC units -to- customary INCH/POUND units -to- METRIC units, DOS-
based conversion program. This utility program has been engineered
using ANSI/IEEE Std 268-1982 and FED Std 376B as a conversion factor
base (for mathematical equations) and also conforms to ASTM E-390's
specification, except for differences in spelling, ie: "ter vs tre",
as in: meter vs metre, liter vs litre, etc.
This program uses drop-down menus to display/select any of: 12 UNIT
Categories, which include: Length, Area, Volume (Dry/Liquid), Force,
Mass, Pressure, Temperature, Energy, Power, Velocity, Acceleration &
Wavelength/Frequency. The total number of "Units of Measure" which
are supported (including all prefixed base-units) is 179. There are
several "unique features" which sets METRIC-X apart from the other
metric conversion programs. All conversions are processed using the
powerful technique of "double-precision calculation", which accounts
for the program's high degree of accuracy.
METRIC-X has been DESIGNATED as an "ACCEPTED METRIC CONVERSION TOOL"
by the U.S. Interagency Council on Metric Policy's Metric Operating
Committee (ICMP/MOC), and has been submitted for review by the:
* Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc. (IEEE)
* American National Metric Council (ANMC)
* United States Metric Association (USMA)
* National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS)
2. LIMITED 30-DAY TRIAL PERIOD LICENSE AGREEMENT

6. INSTALLING METRIC-X ONTO A HARD DISK (From an "ARCHIVED" File)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
METRIC-X may also be supplied in an "Archived" or compressed format.
This may take the form of a MX-203.ZIP file (which requires an UNZIP
program - from PK-Ware, to uncompress the file) or a self-extracting
ZIP-file (MX-203.EXE), where the file will uncompress itself when it
is first executed (run). The MX-203.ZIP form is normally found on a
Electronic Bulletin Board System (BBS), while the MX-203.EXE form is
usually supplied by a Shareware Disk Distributor/Vendor.
UNPACKING the MX-203.ZIP FILE (BBS FORMAT)
------------------------------------------
Step 1. Place the MX-203.ZIP file in the desired sub-directory, (on
your hard drive) - Example: C:\METRIC-X

------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the "conversion answer" is being displayed on the screen, the
last instruction line on the menu will read either;
"Press <E> to display answer in Exponential form"
(if the answer is being displayed as a decimal number) or
"Press <D> to display answer in Decimal form"
(if the answer is being displayed in Exponential Form or in
Scientific Notation).
************************** SHORT-CUT NOTE **************************
You may also "Press <N> to toggle between Notational forms" (Decimal
to Exponent to Decimal to Exponent, etc.), as a short-cut/alternate
to using the <D> and <E> keys.
11. U.S. SURVEY vs INTERNATIONAL UNITS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
When CONVERTING BETWEEN "INCH-POUND UNITS" and "INCH-POUND UNITS",
this program uses U.S. Survey (statute) data, such that 12 inches
= 1 foot, 3 feet = 1 yard and 5280 feet = 1 statute mile, etc.
Again, when in "inch-pound units" to "inch-pound units" mode,
the inch, foot, yard, etc., are all in U.S. Survey Statute units.
When CONVERTING BETWEEN "METRIC UNITS" and "INCH-POUND UNITS", the
inch, foot and yard are based upon their international values, such
that: 1 inch = 0.0254 meters exactly, 1 foot = 0.3048 meters exactly
and 1 yard = 0.9144 meters exactly. The fathom, rod, acre and mile
however, are still based upon the U.S. Survey mile (statute mile),
per the metric law of 1959. The "U.S. Survey mile" to "metric" (or
metric to U.S. Survey mile) conversion factor is based upon the old
standard (the Metric Law of 1866) and is: (1 ft = 1200/3937 m).
Based upon this relationship, the following metric conversions/
equivalents result (and are used by METRIC-X);
1 U.S. Survey Fathom = 1.828803657607315 meters
1 U.S. Survey Rod = 5.029210058420117 meters
1 U.S. Survey Mile = 1609.347218694436 meters
1 U.S. Survey Acre = 4046.873000000013 meters^2
NOTE: 1 International Mile = 1609.344 meters exactly, but is not
used by METRIC-X as America uses the "U.S. Survey Mile".
While the law itself is cause for confusion, METRIC-X has tried to
use the appropriate unit/standard/value for the working environment.
If additional data is required, refer to ANSI/IEEE Std 268-1982.

13. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE (from the ASP)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details, some
request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple
right to continue using the software to an updated program with printed
manual. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial soft-
ware and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the soft-
ware, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor
may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead
is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.

Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-
related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly,
ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help to resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman
at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message

Long Description:
-----------------
METRIC-X - A Metric-English-Metric conversion utility which
uses drop-down menus to display/select any of 12 Categories
& 179 Units of Measure and is a professional-grade product.
The program's accuracy is due to its fast, double-precision
algorithms which are based upon the ANSI/IEEE Std 268-1982,
on "METRIC PRACTICES". The program was developed in a real
working environment and has been engineered to be accurate,
user-friendly (very easy to use) and efficient.
METRIC-X has many unique features which make is easy to use
and adds power to the conversion process. The user may now
swap the "FROM & TO Modes" simply by pressing the Space Bar
or can scroll the FROM Value UP or DOWN using only a single
key (as the TO's Value tracks the new value automatically).
For those who have trouble with forms of notation, METRIC-X
will accept decimal numbers, exponential forms or fractions
as an input and can switch forms between Decimal Numbers or
Exponential (Scientific Notation) with a single key stroke.
The conversion answers may be displayed with 0 to 6 decimal
places or accuracy, with automatic rounding. Once you have
your conversion results (your answer), you may simply enter
another number or you might manipulate to displayed results
or, with a single keystroke, you can Quit/Exit, jump to the
Main Menu, or go to either the FROM or TO selection menus.
METRIC-X was found to be so easy to use, esthetically clean
and so accurate, that its use has been encouraged for all
government agencies and has been DESIGNATED as an "ACCEPTED
METRIC CONVERSION TOOL" by: the U.S. Interagency Council on
Metric Policy-Metric Operating Committee. METRIC-X is the
only such conversion program, to currently hold this honor.
The author of the METRIC-X program is a member of ASP, the
Association of Shareware Professionals.

20. AUTHOR/PUBLISHER INFORMATION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Orion Development Corporation is a small software company, founded in
1986 by its CEO, Richard A. Long, who is a member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals. This (metric) product is further supported by
the author's memberships in; the Institute of Electrical & Electronics
Engineers (IEEE), the American National Metric Council (ANMC), the U.S.
Metric Association (USMA) and the National Conference on Weights and
Measures (NCWM).
At Orion Development, we believe that HIGH PRODUCT QUALITY and CUSTOMER
SATISFACTION are the keys to good business. This concept is fundamental
in our approach to product development, production and marketing. We
saw a basic need for an easy to use, metric-conversion utility to help
America's businesses and Government Agencies during the transition to
the Metric System. METRIC-X meets that need head-on.
Orion Development Corporation has been producing DOS-based software
since 1988, and from that time, our product designs have evolved into
the clean, user-friendly, highly accurate and reasonably priced
software of 1992. METRIC-X(tm) is the first software program which
Orion Development has marketed as Shareware.
Please feel free to contact the author (Richard Long) at any time if
you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Direct correspondence

21. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT/UPGRADE HISTORY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT WAS NEW IN VERSION 1.10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Orion Development Corporation has added "dual media" as a standard
distribution method. Registered users will receive both 3-1/2 and
5-1/4 inch disks with their 24 page Illustrated User's Manual.
* We are pleased to include the statement from the U. S. Interagency
Council on Metric Policy's - Metric Operating Committee, which has
designated the METRIC-X software as an "ACCEPTED METRIC CONVERSION
TOOL" (see 6 below).
* Statements required by ASP were incorporated, (see: 1 and 2 above).
* Minor corrections have been made to: U. S. Survey-based conversion
factors (rod, fathom, acre and statute mile). The Troy ounce was
in error and the conversion factor was corrected.
* We have added an automatic "Scratch-Pad Memory" (which holds the
last FROM and TO Values), if either of these Units is used during
the next conversion.
* If you had entered an number which resulted in an answer which was
"too large to be displayed as a decimal", METRIC-X would set the
display mode to Exponential Notation (and leave you in that mode).
METRIC-X now automatically switches you back to; Decimal Notation,
if that is the mode you were previously working in (and if the new
answer is not too large to be displayed as a decimal).
* Our low introductory price of $15 per copy has failed to cover our
production and support costs, forcing us to make an adjustment in
the price schedules for METRIC-X (see the REGISTER.DOC file).
WHAT WAS NEW IN VERSION 1.20:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The "watthour" and "kilowatthour" (on the POWER Menu) were replaced
by "KVA (@ pf=75)" and "KVA (@ pf=85)".
* The ASCII Text Files, which accompany METRIC-X, were streamlined to
make the user access easier and their content clearer.
* The "NATIONAL NETWORK" and "GLOBAL NETWORK" Licenses were added to
the standard purchase scenarios available.

* The old Unit of Measure: "Miles/sec" (SPEED), was replaced by
"Mach (0°C @ SL)" (VELOCITY).
WHAT WAS NEW IN VERSION 2.01
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The conversion value for Std Atmosphere (Pressure) was in error
by a factor of 1.0E05.
* The pricing schedules were adjusted to be more equitable.
* We added VISA and MASTERCARD service (processed through one of our
distributors).
* We added a 24 hour FAX line (703) 698-0857 to assist with placing

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 2.03
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The support files associated with the METRIC-X product were updated.
* The "Points of Contact" File (POC-LIST.DOC) was updated.
* The "Practical Usage Guidelines" were added to assist users.
22. PRACTICAL USAGE GUIDELINES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
A NOTE ON PRACTICAL USAGE AND CONVERSION ACCURACY
When making conversions, the intended use of the answer must also
be considered. The high degree of accuracy employed in METRIC-X
must be balanced with some common sense.
Do not over-specify a metric equivalent (by including too many
decimal places), where they are neither required nor appropriate
for the application.
For example, the exact mathematical conversion for a lamp which is
7-1/2 inches tall is 19.05 cm. This answer may be technically
correct, but it may not be practical for all applications. You
might specify this lamp's design dimension to be 19.05 cm (to make
use of existing molds, castings or tooling), but if you were
describing this lamp in an advertisement, you should use the
practical value of "19 cm tall". The value of "7-1/2 inches"
however, could conceivably be intended to represent 7.5, 7.50,
7.500, etc., or even greater accuracy. The converted value must
be carried to only a sufficient number of digits to maintain the
accuracy implied or required in the original quantity.
Don't make metrication any harder than it has to be. Keep it simple.
Keep the end application in mind when using metric conversions.
